Android for all and the new Nexus 5
Thursday, October 31, 2013

The first thing you’ll notice about KitKat is we’ve made the experience much more engaging: the book you're reading, the game you're playing, or the movie you're watching—now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see.
Bringing more Google smarts to Android
Behind the polish on the screen is the power under the hood. Take the Phone app, which for most people hasn’t really changed since the days of flip phones. Now, we’re making calling easier than ever, by helping you search across your contacts, nearby places, or even Google Apps accounts (like your company’s directory), directly from within the app. And with the new Hangouts app, all of your SMS and MMS messages are together in the same place, alongside your other conversations and video calls, so you’ll never miss a message no matter how your friends send it. This is just a small taste of KitKat—learn more on our site.
Google has always focused on helping users get immediate access to the information they need, and we want to bring this same convenience and power to users on Android. With the new Nexus 5 launcher, Google smarts are deeply integrated into the phone you carry around with you, so getting to the information you need is simple, easy and fast. Swipe once from the home screen to get Google Now literally at your fingertips. Put Google to work for you by saying “OK, Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song you want to hear. And in the coming weeks, we’re enhancing Now with important new card types that bring you information about contextual topics that interest you such as updates from a favorite website or blog.
Reaching the next 1 billion users
Building a platform that makes mobile phones accessible for everyone has always been at the heart of Android. Until now, some lower-end Android phones couldn't benefit from more recent Android releases due to memory constraints. With KitKat, we've slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time. We did this not only within Android but across Google services like Chrome and YouTube. RAM (or memory) is one of the most expensive parts of a phone, and now Android can run comfortably on the 512MB of RAM devices that are popular in much of the world, bringing the latest goodies in Android 4.4 within reach for the next billion smartphone users.
Introducing Nexus 5
Along with our sweet naming tradition, we also introduce a new device with each platform release to showcase the latest Android innovations. For KitKat, we partnered with LG to develop Nexus 5 -- the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made. Its design is simple and refined to showcase the 5” Full HD display. Nexus 5 also keeps you connected at blazing speeds with 4G/LTE and ultra fast wifi. The advanced new lens on Nexus 5 captures more light for brighter night and sharper action shots. And with optical image stabilization, you no longer have to worry about shaky hands and blurry pictures. A new HDR+ mode automatically snaps a rapid burst of photos and combines them to give you the best possible single shot. Learn more on our site.
Nexus 5 is available today, unlocked and without a contract, on Google Play in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea (and coming soon to India), starting at $349. Just in the time for the holidays, Nexus 5 will be available soon at the following retailers: Sprint, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy and RadioShack.
Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.

ReplyDeleteThis is not fair... Galaxy nexus should also get the KitKat update..
ReplyDeleteWhy not 4.4 on Galaxy Nexus??? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the hard work A-Team! Can't wait to run this on some mini Android PC devices. Also, a smaller memory footprint?!?! I thought every new release was big and badder requiring more storage and RAM?... Oh wait I'm thinking about the past 20yrs of living with M$!
ReplyDeleteThanks again and we will be sure to enjoy this little treat, just in time for the Holidays.

Wow
It is already there in Play..I just tried booking one. Only option I have is united states. When is it going to come to India?
ReplyDeleteWhen Android does actionable Lock Screen Notifications like iOS it will be perfect for me. Please put more effort into notifications, how and when they appear, from which app, banner vs large, etc.
ReplyDeleteAllow me to read and act upon a notification when I hear it come in, or ignore it - all without picking up the device or saying anything.
android developer . . . have to start a built in . . .file manager . . . we need this . . . if i have buy any of nexus model then first i have to download filemanager from Playstore.
ReplyDeleteUp till Sept 28th, I was still using my old Nokia 6300. So when it died, I decided to join the smartphone bandwagon and bought a Nexus 4. I'm still trying to get a handle on jelly bean and now I have to get used to this new version?
ReplyDeleteAiyo. I long for the good old days when people used carrier pigeons for long distances communications.
Waarom weer niet de Galaxy Nexus updaten naar kitkat, google maakt zijn toezeggingen. niet waar, erg teleurstellend.
ReplyDeleteİts really unfair! G nex has enough memory!! You are a liar google!! You need an update for g nex bec u said perfect experince for everyone. Dont do this mistake
ReplyDeleteI have a nexus 5 but when I say okay Google while on the home screen it doesn't launch Google now. Please help
ReplyDeleteHow do I set it up
which os now running in your phone ?? dude ..!!
DeleteI think, it will only work if your language preference is set to English (US). Hope this is helpful. Cheers...VJ
DeleteIt's very disappointing that KitKat won't be released on the Galaxy Nexus. Especially if the reason is a bloody publicity thing. We all know you have some new stuff coming out, but that shouldn't be at the expense of loyal Android users.
ReplyDeleteSo disappointing.
your right my bro . !!!
DeleteMy HTC device has 768 mb ram with dual core processor, will it get kitkat update? Please I want to hear some favourable answer as I am huge fan of you guys and android...
ReplyDeleteyes .... you will get .. but it will take a time ...!!!
DeleteСкажите пожалуйста а на Samsung galaxy s4 mini будет android 4.4 ?
ReplyDeleteWHY WONT ATT RELEASE UPDATES. Im still on 4.1.2 because att stopped releasing updates my friend who recently yried updating his blackberry z10 has the same issue with att so he side loaded the update after it was leaked on the internet but iphones go straight through qnd get to update to ios7
ReplyDeleteSo is Keylime Pie still in the works?
ReplyDeleteIt seems the one word associated with Google, Android 4.4 & KitKat these last few days has been: "disappointment".
ReplyDeleteAnother big hype, wait, waiting, upcoming weeks, for an updated operating system that changes icons from blue to white? Makes paying at Google easier. More of your personal data within Google's reach, and what else? Not a heck of a lot for all that commotion. For making android the #1 OS in the world, Google should have rewarded it's enablers with something special. Once again that is not the case.
I call shenanigans!
Sucks I spent alot of money on an samsung s4 active one of the latest phones out right now and it looks like samsung is making no attempt what so ever to get 4.4 kitkat for my phone at all. I still cant get 4.3 jellybean not sure ill ever go for samsung again if they don’t plan on makeing updates available for there phone’s . No point on buying the latest phone if you cant upgrade to keep it one of the the latest ..htc has said that the htc one will have 4.4 kitkat available for Christmas. .
ReplyDeleteAny release date for 4.4 on the Nexus 4? Really thought it would have rolled out in real time, considering it is stock android. Hopefully we can get at least a date.
ReplyDeleteNo, no date for Nexus 4 yet. The "official" word is ... "...in upcoming weeks".
DeleteHow about that for a slap in the face to all those loyal Nexus investors. It has already been 2 weeks and not a word since the "upcoming weeks" remark from Google. I remember when they held their customers in high regard. Not anymore. In order for you to matter to Google now you have to purchase the latest model. Google has grown up now and has to be fed, and fed regularly. If you spent $300-$400. a year ago on a Google device and wonder if and when it will receive an update, their OFFICIAL RESPONSE IS: "IN THE UPCOMING WEEKS". You know like when you call the dealer you bought that new car from a year after the check clears. They don't have time for you, your not this weeks money, You're money already spent...
